How Vedic kundali matchmaking works
Vedic kundali matchmaking — known as Guna Milan in Sanskrit — compares two birth charts to predict marital harmony. Unlike Western sun-sign compatibility, Guna Milan relies on the Moon's Nakshatra (lunar mansion) at the time of birth, which carries far more nuanced information than the solar zodiac alone.
The system evaluates eight distinct dimensions of compatibility — called koots or ashtakoot — each worth a different number of points. They sum to a maximum of 36, and traditionally a marriage was only solemnised when the score crossed a minimum threshold.
| Koot | Points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual & ego compatibility |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual control & influence |
| Tara | 3 | Health and well-being together |
| Yoni | 4 | Sexual & physical compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental & intellectual bond |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament alignment |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Prosperity & family harmony |
| Nadi | 8 | Health, progeny, genetic match |
Each koot is calculated from the relationship between the two Moon positions. For example, Nadi is derived from the Nakshatra group, and Bhakoot compares the positional distance between Moon signs. The math is deterministic — what requires interpretation is the cumulative meaning of the score plus the doshas.
